Can I place a 1" furnace filter in a slot designed for a 6"?

I have an old Carrier electronic air filter, which is garbage and wanted to replace it with a solid filter. The slot is actually 6" high. I have just purchased a 5" which fits perfectly, however it costs $70 each, and was wondering if I could just place a 1" 3M filtrete filter after the 5" is used.

dont be too quick to change from the 5" to a 1"....the 5" will last 6-12 months because of its much greater surface area,wont clog as quickly..the 1" filters need replaced every2-3 months.....fyi,home depot sells a filter thats designed to replace air cleaner cells...they are around 4" thick or so....come in 16" x 25",,,,20" x 20",,,,and 20" x 25",,,i think they only cost $30-$40.......to answer your qustion,,yes you can use a 1" as long as it is secure,,doesnt move around,allowing air to go around it instead of through it..........dan
