I need info on the best air filters!?

I was wondering how a HEPA air filter works (not down at the molecular level but if you're supposed to plug it in somewhere and let it work it's magic). Also if you need to buy replacement filters or if you just need to clean it every couple of days and etc.

I have been using a Hepa air purifier in my home for going on 3 years now. It has worked great with little maintenance. It has a built in filter monitor that goes from green to red. It has a prefilter element that needs to be rinsed out in cold water every couple of months. The main filter lasts at least a year at a time , and only needs to be replaced when the monitor reaches red, indicating the need for a new one. It's been worth the money, and little time needed for its' benefits. Find a place, plug it in, let it work.
Sorry I do not know about the Oreck. I hope this helps.
NOTE: ginny is wrong, they are stand alone units, but some are integrated into other systems such as heating units. You can find them at all major retailers , RE: Walmart, Sears, Target, etc...

My Search For The Best Air Purifier

Because of allergies and asthma I’ve owned over 56 air purifiers since 1974. And I even became a Health Practitioner in 1982 because of the way I overcame allergies and asthma naturally.

I’ve owned: Ozone air purifiers, Ionic air purifiers, Zeolite, HEPA air purifiers, UV light, Catalytic plate air purifiers, and water air purifiers with brnad namesincluding – Alpine Air, EcoQuest, Hunter, Panasonic, Austin, IQair, SunAir, and about 23 other “non-name” Chinese brands. (I avoided Sharper Image and Oreck because ionic alone just doesn’t do enough for me.)

So I’ll just say I have seen it all.

Last year Austin, IQAIR, Oreck and Sharper Image (their new models, not ionic breeze) made me an offer to distribute their products.

I said no.

Here’s why:

The No Replacement Filter Air Purifiers Don’t Do a Great Job

The idea sounds great but once you've seen a dirty HEPA filter (HEPA’s are a cloth-like filter which holds dust and pollution) you realize the ones without filters aren't catching very much dust or pollen – YOUR LUNGS ARE!

“No Replacement Filter Models” include:

Ionic Breeze

Oreck Models (they contradict themselves on their website. You have to replace filters, but they aren't HEPA)

Remedy – Get an air purifier that has affordable replacements. HEPA is important if you have allergies.

Most Replacement Filters (HEPA, Charcoal) are Over-Priced

In Japan air purifiers include 2-3 extra replacement filters. WHY? Because the Japanese think ahead.

U.S. manufacturers realize American's don’t think ahead so they overcharge. Once you purchase an air purifier you’ll be stuck paying what they ask. (Reminds me of my $89 inkjet printer –the replacement cartridges are $28!)

Remedy: Ask for filter prices first. Every 6-12 months you’ll need to change filters. And anything over $25 is too much.

Buying Hint: Ask for a discount on extra replacement filters before buying.

Most Air Purifiers Don’t Do The Square Footage On The Box

I called Oreck when their new $700 tower was listed as covering 1100 square feet. “How Many Times Does It Change The Air In The Room?” (which means how many times it will change all the air in that room). They didn’t know. Finally a tech said: “One per hour”. That’s poor.

Remedy: Make sure to ask for 4-9 “Changes Per Hour” per Square footage.(You may have to call the manufacturer) Square Footage as listed on the box is also based on an empty room.

So How Do I Choose The Right Technology ?

Here are some guidelines to match the basic technologies to your needs:

#1 HEPA, Pre-filter, Neg/Ion, Plasma Grid = Helpful for allergies and asthma, some odors

#2 Carbon, Charcoal, Ozone = Helpful for odors, smoke, animal smells, chemical sensitivity, VCO’s, and immune system

#3 UV, TiO2, Plasma Grid, Ceramic = Helpful for immune system (colds, flu, viruses, pathogens), and eliminating musty odors

New Sensor Technology There is a cool new technology from Japan that detects pollen. It promises to bring greater allergy relief. It continuously adjusts the purifier to the room saving electricity and guesswork.

What's great is that more manufacturers are now producing air purifiers that include multiple forms of technology.

CONCLUSION: Look for an air purifier that has HEPA, and 3-5 additional technologies such as UV and ion. Keep away from infomercial brands as the price markup is high. Expect to pay $250-325 (and don’t pay more). Make sure the replacement filters are reasonably priced.

What's the best air purifier for dust allergy sufferers?

I've read numerous online reviews, so now I'd like answers from people who have either found one that works superbly or have tried several and could make recommendations or tell me which ones to avoid. Replacement filters should be considered into the cost factor. Thanks

We have used Hunter air purifiers which work but don't take all the dust out of the air like you hope. House still got very dusty. Also, replacement filters are expensive.

Ionizing is supposed to make dust heavy so it lands on top of everything in the room rather than making its way to the filter. the Hunters had an optional button for that. Using one with the button on gave both my mother-in-law in her home and me in mine (different brand) bad colds.

I have seen (and returned) tower air purifiers which simply pulled in the dust and dropped it onto the floor below the purifier which seems senseless.

I wish it were easy to determine what works well and what doesn't because we read the reviews and just went out and bought whatever seemed sensible.

Change the air filter medium in your furnace monthly, too, or at least more than once a year and have someone who isn't affected do it for you.

Body Elements & Constitution (Prakriti)

There are five elements of which the human body is made up of : akasha (ether), Vayu (air), Agni (Fire), Jala (Water) and Prithvi (earth).

Because of the above five elements, all human beings are constituted with a combination of two or three primary ones. Those are called body humours or Doshas: Kapha, Vata and Pitta. Any person is easy to treat with the identification of his/her category.

Vata category is combination of space and air elements : People are fearful, illogical and insecure. Skin is dry. They have thin hair. They have dark brown or grey eyes. Vata activates the nervous system, hearing and speech and the persons is a great enthusiast with creativity. However, the state of his mind gets imbalanced easily because of which he gets diseases like insomnia, cramps and constipation.Pitta category is fire element : These people are achievers, intellectual, fiery, angry, judgemental, with clear voice and precise expression. They have soft and fine hair. Eyes are blue, grey and hazel. They are good leaders and warm personality when healthy. Because of emphasis on metabolism and anger, they suffer from acidity, ulcers and rashes and also thinning of hair occurs.

Kapha category is(water and earth element : They have thick lustrous hair. Eyes are blue or brown. People have great endurance capacity with calm and steady mind. They are capable of forgiveness and intense love. Sometimes they are greedy and possessive. Kapha is the lubricant that keeps the joints working, keeps the body vibrant and balanced with immunity.
Too much of it leads to lethargy, congestion, allergies and weight gain.

Nature of ailments

After the Prakriti is decided, one should know the nature of the diseases(Vikriti). It is imbalance obviously, but there are tow extremes to every imbalance, either deficiency or excess. Those are heavy-light, slow-sharp, cold-hot, unctuous-dry, smooth-rough, solid-liquid, soft-hard, stable-mobile, subtle-gross, and non-slimmy-slimmy. When corrected, Prakriti or original constitution is restored.

These 20 characteristics that with regards to one's basic constitution will decide the treatment. These may be caused by wrong foods causing improper digestion, wrong sleeping habits, improper mindset, anxiety etc.

The other type of ailment is clogging or blockage (Ama) for life energy to circulate for vitality. When this is corrected, it produces energy, perfect immunity, physical strength and hence a general sense of bliss which is summarised in Ayurveda in one word called Ojas.
