My air purifier smells like cigarette smoke. How do I get rid of that smell?

My grandmother gave me her old Holmes air purifier but even with a new HEPA filter it blows out air that smells like cigarette smoke. How do I properly clean it so that it smells like it's supposed to?

First of all, you need to find out where the smell is coming form. Is it from the air filter itself or maybe inside the air purifier. If you know how to open it up, you can find the source of the smell. If not, let others help you.

If I remove the air filter on my home's AC, will that damage it?

It's very hot in Arizona and I get much more airflow without a filter on my AC. It feels good now, but will it damage my AC to run it without a filter?

YES IT WILL DAMAGE IT!!!!

If your coils get clogged with dust your coil will eventually flood liquid refrigerant down the suction line to the compressor due to lack of air flow.

This can cause 2 major problems. The first would likely be that the oil in the crankcase could be washed out and your compressor would suffer from poor lubrication and a shortened life.

The second is that if your compressor piston cylinder is flooded with liquid refrigerant it cannot compress and will be "slugged" and generally break a piston rod or do serious damage to the valves. Either way you are buying a new one and they are not cheap.

A compressor is a vapor pump. Liquid cannot be compressed and you might as well be dropping a chunk of steel in your cylinder.

My answer is the true purpose of an air filter in the return duct of your AC system. Dust mites I can deal with, but $1500 compressor on a 101° day is a different story.

Our last system that we will be looking at is the Hunter Permalife.  I want to recommend Hunter Permalife to anyone who is suffering from any type of dust related illness.  The system works almost silently, allowing people to continue with their everyday lives.  Another great feature of this particular air purifier is that is cleans the air throughout a larger room.  That means that instead of needing two air purifiers, the single Hunter Permalife can clean a room up to a 510 square foot room.  You will not find many other air purifiers which are able to clean that large of a room by themselves.  Another unique feature of the Hunter Permalife is that unlike many other air purifiers where you need to purchase a new filter every few months, the filter in this system is permanent.  All you need to do is take a vacuum to it every few months and you will be able to continue to breath clean air for many years down the road.

What Causes Asthma?

Asthma is an allergic reaction that can be brought on by a variety of triggers including certain foods, medicines, organisms, dander, mold and airborne pollution. An asthmatic attack can be very frightening for both the asthmatic and their friends and family. While an air purifier alone is not sufficient to remove all allergans and asthmatic triggers from a home, they can be an effective component in your arsenal.

A quality air purifier alone cannot trap all household allergans that may contribute to asthmatic attacks. The reason for this is that not all allergans are or remain airborne. Though no air cleaning system can remove all allergans from a home, studies have shown they can significantly reduce the levels of airborn allergans and irritants, in some cases, by up to 90%. The HEPA filter has long been used in laboratory experiments, and has been proven to reduce the level of particles in the air. Many air filtration systems rely solely on HEPA technology, or, include a HEPA filter as part of a multi-filtration system.

Multi Filter Air Cleaning Systems

There are purifiers available today that combine more than one type of air filtration technology. The HEPA filter is a widely known, effective and popular air filter. Newer technologies include ionization and UV filters, which, when combined with a HEPA, can trap or kill allergans and particles that are much smaller in size than was previously possible. There are some UV filters that can effectively treat airborne pollutants that are down to 0.001 microns in size. The HEPA air filter traps particles as tiny as 0.3 microns. Ionization technology for air filtration works by negatively producing negatively charged ions which attach themselves to contaminants. These contaminants then drop from the air, resulting in cleaner air to breathe. The HEPA operates by physically trapping particles that go through the filter. While the UV method works by killing or destroying germs.

While no air filtration system alone can remove all potential allergans from the air, they can definitely help reduce them. Subsequently helping to reduce the number of allergic or asthmatic attacks an individual may experience. Much of this depends on what the individual is allergic to, what filtration system they choose, and what other allergan-removal methods they employ in their home environment. A quality air purifier can be a valuable tool in fighting allergies and the effects of asthma.

Has anyone with allergies tried to use an aircleaner in a cubicle environment?

Just wondering if it really would help. My office building is old, lots of dusty old files, etc. Thanks to anyone with a similar situation.

From my own personal experience, my room air cleaner makes a huge difference in my ability to breathe! However, various professionals and organizations (such as the American Lung Association) claim that a person shouldn't expect an air cleaner to benefit the health of a person with allergies or asthma (source: Consumer Reports, October 2005).

If your office uses forced-air heating or cooling, then consider a so-called "whole-house model". This professionally-installed product-class has excellent performance at prices between USD$500 and USD$700.
So-called "room models" can be moved around like a suitcase or small box, but this product class has poorer performance, overall.

Stay away from products such as the "Sharper Image Ionic Breeze" -- they pollute the air with ozone, and work poorly. Members of a class action against the company wanted millions of dollars in merchandise credits, in compensation.
