Are there good quiet air purifiers that I can buy?

Now that it is spring, my allergies are getting worse. Does anyone recommend a good air purifier? My biggest concern is the noise level (and of course how well it removes particles). I also do not want an ionic purifier because of the ozone, and they usually are not as effective as HEPA. I have heard of the Blueair air purifiers, but I think they are a little pricey. Are there cheaper but still quiet air purifiers around? Or do you pay what you get? If you have any, please give me some air purifier recommendations.
I have heard of ionic breeze, but I am concerned about the ozone it emits. It also does not do so well at removing particles. Will anyone please recommend a brand or model that i should look at?

As a consumer of course you are looking for an air cleaner that costs $1, can clean the volume of air in a stadium in a minute, and is as quite as a hummingbird.
Back on planet reality you get what you pay for. Cheap air cleaners have filters that don’t last long and loud motors. Electronic air cleaners need regular washing. That’s ok if you can remember to do it and have the time! They are also susceptible to generating ozone, but ozone can be eliminated with proper maintenance and a carbon post filter.
A good place to start is the Consumer Reports article on air cleaners. Keep in mind not all air cleaners got rated.
Personal story - Friend of mine has allergies, purchased our PM-400 HEPA air cleaner and loves it. The PM-400 has one of the largest HEPA filters and a 13-pound carbon filter for collecting odors. They put it in the hallway between their bedroom and the baby's room (diaper odors). When they are gone they crank it up and when they get home they turn it to a low quiet speed.

What are the chances my parents can hear my vibrator?

It's actually a back massager, and it can be semi-loud. I usually use it when I'm in the bathroom, right before I shower. But I'd like to use it tonight in my bed. I sleep with like 5 blankets on, which I'm sure muffles that sound a bit. I also have this air purifier and heater things both going at the same time, which are about as loud as a fan. My parents room is right next to mine. What do you think the chances are that they will hear me?

put it under the blankets and turn it on and see how loud it is.

obviously YOU will hear it, but i doublt it will be that noticable. you can even leave it on under the covers and walk away slowly while taking note how much quieter it gets as you walk away. its a safe bet that you wont be able to hear it once you reach your door, so niether will they!

Home foreclosure is the financial world's "neutron bomb": Hopes and dreams are shattered, families torn apart, and yet the house remains standing. And then there's the agonizing aftermath. 1. You understand the true benefits of home ownership – No one has to tell you why owning beats renting. Deductible mortgage interest and property taxes are two obvious financial plusses. There's also the comfort of knowing that a fixed-rate loan means principal and interest payments will remain the same for the next 30 years.

Moreover, former homeowners generally take more pride in their residence, even if they are only leasing. You also tend to be more active in your community and more concerned about keeping the neighborhood safe and well-maintained.

2. You know maintaining a home takes work – Every house, no matter how new or well-built, requires upkeep and routine care. First-time homeowners face a steep learning curve of household maintenance chores. As tenants they didn't need to know that changing a $2 furnace filter could avoid a $1,000 HVAC repair bill.

Former homeowners also know the difference between a minor repair they can handle themselves and major problems that require a landlord's involvement. What are the pros and cons of a central air w/ heat pump?

We live in north east PA and just bought a 30yr old ranch style home that has a central air system that will be in need of updating, maybe not this year, but next. Currently the house has baseboard electric heating and it was suggested we update a new central air system to a unit with a heat pump. It seems like people either love them or hate them and I just wanted to get some more opinions. I am looking for cost effectiveness as well as comfort. Personally, I like a moderate climate, neither too hot nor too cold so some say this would be perfect. My father thinks we have too extreme of a climate in the summer and winter for a heat pump to provide either adequate heating or cooling. We are looking for some more opinions/ideas, please.

Heat pump are fine but they do have some things to be concerned about one is there is a evaporator drip pan inside the home at the intake , it has a primary and a secondary drain , like when you run the A/C in your car and turn the motor off and you note clear water dripping from the under the car on the passenger side well that how cars git rid of the condensation OK, follow so far, now the primary drain in a heat pump goes to one of the sinks in the house usually the bathroom closest, its a rubber hose that will be in only one drain so it will look different than the rest of the sinks drains the law says the secondary drain must come out of the house and be seen in the event of the primary plugging up ,and if you see water coming out of this pipe usually just a white schedule 40 PVC, means the primary is plugged up and needs serviced , you must know where the secondary goes ask the seller or A/C person i have seen the secondary fill up with water & attics and sealing fall in cause they were not properly installed , other that that they are a great unit self contained and long life and very cold air and warm air , i have one where i live and keep the filter changed i do one a month depends how much dust is in air where you will live, also 3M sells a expensive filter that's great hepa filter stops all contaminants from re entering your house , good question my has run 14 years trouble free so far

The general concept of the Heat Pump system is that it works as a reverse air conditioning system. It converts low temperature heat into a much higher and more useful temperature. This heat can then be used for heating water and the home. It can also be used to pre-heat water before it goes into a more conventional boiler

Two main types of Heat Pumps

1. Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) -  These heat pumps use pipes buried in the garden to extort heat from the ground. Using initial heat from the ground, together with the high efficiency of the heat pump will save a large amount of carbon dioxide emissions that would other wise be expelled into the atmosphere under traditional heating systems.

Ground Source Heat Pumps are getting increasingly popular world wide with extra focus in the American and European markets. According to estimates, there are approximately 550,000 units installed world wide (of which 80% are domestic), and there are about 66,000 annual installations on going.

2. Air Source Heat Pump – These heat pumps are electrically powered systems which is a combination of a compressor and two carefully matched heat exchangers. Simply designed to offer space heating, through water systems, extracting air, a renewable source which is also free. The air will absorb and store heat from the sun, then it is possible to extract considerable heat from ambient temperatures as low as -20°C. Air Source heat pumps have major advantages over its rival the ground source heat pump.

Advantage of air source heat pump over ground source heat pump: The air system is easily installed to either new build or older properties as there is no need for any time consuming installation or expensive excavations. All the compressor requires is sitting in a sufficient outside air flow.

The Disadvantages of air source heat pumps is that it works better in mild temperate. In climates with extended periods of freezing temperatures you may be forced to use other forms of heat such as electric or gas heaters

Although the technology is well used around the world, the UK market is much slower to catch up with this new renewable energy technology as there is a low level of awareness. We believe this is likely to change, as more systems become available and as people search for better ways in conserving energy and reducing carbon dioxide.

How much does it cost to install?

A heat pump system is more expensive to install than a normal domestic combination boiler system but the compared to oil boilers it is less expensive. A typical 8kW system costs £6,000-£12,000, plus the price of the distribution system around the house, maybe another £2,000-£4,000. But if the environment is something you are concerned about the heat pump system is a good step to take.

Grants/ Advice

On a positive note, there is funding and advice to help with the cost of installing ground source heat pumps, which significantly reduces the cost.

In Scotland householders can access capital funding of 30% of the installed cost, up to a limit of £4,000 from the Scottish Community and Householder Renewables Initiative (SCHRI). Call 0800 138 8858 or visit www.est.org.uk/schri
