The vacuum to the dash is the first problem. Get that fixed and you should have all the airflow positions back. That older system was the first generation atc, and used a temp. sensor under the dash pad to control the a/c function. It also used a vacuum servo to control the blend door. Thus it is possible, that by repairing the vacuum supply line to the dash, that it all may start working like it should. As long as the a/c system under the hood still functions, that is. But that is where to begin, and good luck!!

What are the main reason's why you would choose high velocity air conditioning verses forced air conditioning?

We have an old house, but I have different estimates one saying they could install forced air and others stating they could do HVAC. Which one is better when given both choices? Should forced air be significantly cheaper to install?

HVAC is an initial-ism / acronym that stands for " heating , ventilation , and air conditioning.
I believe that the systems your referring to are one in the same.
Someone may just be trying to BS you with the terminology. Check your estimates and do your own research before signing anything. Look up the different units and check their cost vs. efficiency.

What line of action should we take since our new home air conditioner is failing?

Moved into our new construction home Jan '07. This was a custom build. End of Jan our Trane AC/Heat Pump secondary drain pan filled up and kicked off the kill switch. This has continued to happen EVERY month. AC subcontractor has been trying to make the thing right. Basically going thru their troubleshooting every 30 days. Still crapping out. Tonight was the 9th time. Twice in 2 days. Compressor went out yesterday and they got it going again. Tonight it started blowing hot. They arrived; magically starting blowing cold after doing nothing to the unit. My wife finally lost it, called AC owner and demanded to see a new AC in our home. We also contacted the builder and demanded that he make something happen. AC contractor 1st suggested going thru Trane support then said he'd call the local Trane rep to replace (who's been well aware of this and has been suggesting troubleshooting tips to AC guy thru this process). This thing has drug out long enough. What do we do? Legal? Wait out?

The builder is responsible, the contractor is also responsible. They will keep screwing around until they get tired of these "call backs" this is "pick-up" work for the contractor, they have men that just work on "pick-ups" I know, I was one, for problems in homes after the people move in, until the one year warranty wears out, then your screwed.

Speak with who's ever in charge and see what they're willing to do, your wife, "loosing it" isn't to wrong, they can see the nerves are getting frazzled.
There are glitches in units like everything else, this apparently is a Saturday night special. Tell them you want it out.

If they turn their back on you then seek the advice of an attorney that's willing to work right now, not next winter. Sometimes a letter or phone call from him for $200.00 is worth it.

1. You understand the true benefits of home ownership – No one has to tell you why owning beats renting. Deductible mortgage interest and property taxes are two obvious financial plusses. There's also the comfort of knowing that a fixed-rate loan means principal and interest payments will remain the same for the next 30 years.

Moreover, former homeowners generally take more pride in their residence, even if they are only leasing. You also tend to be more active in your community and more concerned about keeping the neighborhood safe and well-maintained.

2. You know maintaining a home takes work – Every house, no matter how new or well-built, requires upkeep and routine care. First-time homeowners face a steep learning curve of household maintenance chores. As tenants they didn't need to know that changing a $2 furnace filter could avoid a $1,000 HVAC repair bill.

Former homeowners also know the difference between a minor repair they can handle themselves and major problems that require a landlord's involvement. I live in southern California. Should I buy an air conditioner and a gas furnace or should I buy a heat pump?

I am buying a central heating and cooling system for my house which is a single family two-story house built in the 70s with no air conditioner and heating provided by a gas furnace. Should I buy 1) an air conditioner and a gas furnace OR 2) a heat pump and eliminate the need of a furnace? Thank you for your help.

Without question, the heat pump. What you save in energy costs will pay for the new unit in time. Make sure you get the highest energy rating you can afford.

There are many benefits to having a heat pump air conditioner installed.

A heat pump will provide you with energy efficient heat all through winter, and come summer will cool your home effectively.

If you suffer from asthma, a heat pump can help by reducing the relative humidity of the room, and filtering out dust particles and other allergens by trapping them inside the air filters. Reducing the humidity makes it easier to breathe and also makes the room feel less 'stuffy'.

Heat pumps are also child friendly as there are no open flames or hot heating elements. Most heat pumps are mounted high on the wall or hidden away so the prying little fingers of children cannot get inside.

Most air conditioners today are 'split type' inverter heat pumps. A 'split type' air conditioner basically means you have an indoor and and outdoor unit with pipework connecting the two. An inverter heat pump means that the compressor speed is varied by the use of a DC inverter and speed drive. This enables the compressor to slow down in speed to maintain a constant temperature rather than cycling between full capacity and switching off every 10 to 15 minutes. Always opt for the inverter type heat pump as it will save you money on energy.

An electric heater converts electricity into heat, whereas a heat pump simply transfers heat from one source to another. This means that you can have heating or cooling by moving heat into or out of your room. It also means that heat pumps are very energy efficient as they can transfer up to 4kW of heat into your home for every 1kW of power used. Compare that to an electric heater that only generates 1kW of heat for every 1kW of power used.

There are a number of heat pump options available to you, dependent on whether you wish to air condition one room or your whole home.

To air condition a single room, a wall mounted heat pump is recommended. Wall mounted heat pumps can be installed high up (high wall), or low down by the floor like a conventional electric or gas heater. For two or three rooms, you can opt for a multi-split heat pump system. This means you have one outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units. Alternatively, you can go for a ducted heat pump system. These can be installed hidden away inside your loft, or under your floor and are connected to outlet grilles around your home.

The correct sizing of a heat pump for a given room size is critical. Too small and it will struggle to heat or cool the room. Too large and it will constantly cycle on and off. Always consult the professionals for correct sizing.

Your local air conditioning and heat pump specialists will be able to correctly size the heat pump for your requirements. Most companies also provide a free, no obligation quotation. My advice as an air conditioning and refrigeration engineer is that you should phone around for a number of quotes. This ensures that you can verify the unit sizing from a number of engineers, plus you can also save a few hard earned dollars.
