Should I get our air ducts cleaned?

My parents smoke in the house, alot. We also have 2 dogs. I'm 16 years old and I dont ever recall our air ducts being cleaned once, and my parents only replace the furnace filters every 6 months...

If anyone has allergies this is a no brainer YES. If no one has a reaction to breathing the smoke 2nd hand or otherwise nor susceptible to dust its not a bad idea either. BUT hire someone with a camera setup so you can inspect the before and after of the service. Anyone charging less and not able to show you that the ducts are really clean most likely hasn’t cleaned them as well as they should have. If they do clean them properly they need to invest in a camera so customers can visually appreciate the service and be confident they have what they have paid for. WHY folks get their ducts cleaned pay for it and then cant see the difference is just bad business and maybe a waste of money. Send me the money and I can guarantee as good a job and wont even set foot on your place.

Some company’s only clean the duct vents around where the air comes into the room. this is ok but isn’t really getting anything clean, unless you believe washen behind your ears and not shampooen your hair is clean.

Stuffiness can be caused by slow air changes in a room. See if there is a space under the doorway or above the door to allow the air out as it comes in. Try turning the vent damper more open if closed. Put down a new rug over old carpet. Keep dogs and cats out of the rooms. Possibly the room your talking about is too far from the thermostat or thermostat is too far from the return air where its drawn back into the system for conditioning meaning dehumidified and cleaned. A ceiling fan may help to test this try a box fan first.

Also be advised over the years there is a buildup on indoor ac coils and this can be the cause of "stuffiness" A quality HVAC contractor is recommended for this situation because it may be less in cost to replace the coil than to clean it and hope it holds together (especially if its over 10years old or has a metal drain pan. Water leaks from the drain pan rusty holes and/or the corrosion at the coil ends where "Freon" will leak out). In fact if you’ve been having a recharge on recent years its time to think about replacing the indoor coil if you haven’t been able to find the leak(s).

How do I get to the air filter on my 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS?

The air intake tube goes into the driver side fender and I would like to maybe get a cold air intake, but first I want to get to the factory filter and see how dirty it is. The car has 24500 miles on it. I want the CAI to maybe get a few more horses out of the car before I install a nitrous kit on it. It is the 2.0 supercharged model.

Follow the black tube to a black box with clips on it it's in the black box flip the clips and lift the top up inside you will find the filter.

Water and computers obviously don’t mix well either. Even slight spray or splashing can cause terminal problems with a computer, especially if fluid finds its way into the electronics.

Excessive temperatures are also a problem for computers. Computer processors are usually cooled by internal fans, if they get too hot they can burn out as can most of the electronics inside a PC. However, excessive dust, dirt or grime can also cause an overheat, as will computers kept near a heat source such as a radiator or oven. Excessive cold can effect a computers operation also, if any condensation inside a computer freezes, it will expand, potentially damaging the components.

Shocks, vibrations, knocks and bangs can also finish off a computer for good. Even just moving a PC from one location to another can play havoc, dislodging PCI cards or unsettling wiring. A large enough of a jolt and it can cause irreparable damage. Computers have protective enclosures of course but these are only made from thin sheets of metal (normally aluminium) and offer little protection.

For computers having to operate in hostile conditions such as dusty warehouse or production line then the best protection comes in the shape of an industrial PC enclosure.

These computer enclosures allow a standard PC all the protection of the most expensive and rugged industrial machine, shielding the sensitive components from dust, water, dirt, vibration, banging, knocks, heat and cold.

By protecting a PC from these types of hostilities a PC’s life span can be dramatically lengthened.

Originally, furnace filters were designed to protect the furnace and fans. But now with the importance of air quality, it's being used with other equipments. Today it is being used in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) industry. Here are some of the other types of furnace filters.

Clean air is what all people want inside their homes. According to U.S. EPA indoor air is 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. The average person inhales about 18,185 liters of air each day. With this, the person breathes 1,120,000,000 particles of dust or microns.

• Disposable fiberglass filters

These filters are the least effective and cheapest units. They are designed to block large dust and particles only. This means smaller particles are not filtered. They are used to protect the furnace and placed in a cardboard frame.

They can filter about 2% of sub micron particles. They are typically installed in the ductwork of the home system.

• Pleated "allergy" filters

They are 35 to 50% efficient when it comes to filtering large allergens like pollen or dust. They are made of denser mesh material. They are better than flat filters. Most are made of electrostatically charged fibers that attract small particles. They cost around $5-$15 each and last for 3 months.

On the other hand, high standard units cost around $250 to $450. The pleats give the furnace filters more media, or surface area, where particles can be captured. Thin pleated filters can filter about 11% of sub micron particles and 25% in deep pleated. Some filters are sold pleated and electrostatic at the same time.

These filters produce 1 inch, 2 inch, and 4-6 inches deep materials. But air conditioners and heaters are 1-2 inches mostly. They usually have a MERV 5 rating.

• HEPA filters

High Efficiency Particulate Air filters are high standard units. They are used in hospitals, research facilities, and electronic laboratories. These places specifically require cleaner air. They block air particles but also blocks air flow.

They can filter about 2% of sub micron particles. They are also used in HEPA vacuum cleaners and HEPA air cleaners. They are advisable to be used by asthma sufferers.

They are similar in design to standard pleated air filters. But they have more pleats per inch to trap the smallest particles. They were developed by the Atomic Energy Commission during World War II. They were created to remove and capture radioactive dust particles from the air. They were designed to protect the human respiratory system.

They consist of a core filter that is folded over corrugated separators to strengthen core. They form the air passages between the pleats.

• Activated Carbon Air Filter

They are known as charcoal filters and are an alternative to media air filters. They are installed together with the regular filter pads. They are used for removing cigarette smokes, chemical and other odors. It removes the undesirable smells in the house. They are also available in panel filters but not as effective as the others.

Factors to Consider in Choosing a Furnace Filter

About 180 years ago, Joseph Livesey, a wealthy man formed a society of seven around a simple pledge never to consume alcohol again. What we know today as "The University of Central Lancashire" in fact started from a small college called "Harris Technical College" by the society.
