Can I make a cover for my air conditioning unit?
We have central air and out unit is in our tiny back yard.
During the summer time it is tough to sit back there since the central air unit is blowing hot air on us and is kind of loud.
We are tearing down our concrete wall and putting up a white vinyl fence. While we do that I was hoping to be able to make a fence using the vinyl fencing to go around the unit.
Would this be safe? We would make sure to have 3 inches or so around the unit and it wouldn't be enclosed to ensure plenty of air gets in.
That 'hot air' you object to is carrying off the heat
rejected by the A.C. Unit. It must be allowed to
escape or the unit won't work.
If you put up something to deflect it be sure you
don't impede the flow too much.

why anti freeze thermostat are used in roof top package air conditioner's specially in carrier package-units.
what i found that this anti freeze thermostat are triping the package units frequently triping the unit from safety control ciruict.
It prevents the cooling coil from freezing (and becoming plugged up or bursting).
Why is the freeze-stat tripping? Is the cooling coming on when outside air temperature is too low? Is there enough airflow through the cooling coil (slipping belt or motor too small or dirty coil)?
Or is it a bad freeze-stat? Or freeze-stat setting too high?

could I turn a window air conditioner into a water souce heat pump?
by removing the outside fan and encasing the outside coils(radiator) in a water box that is receiving fresh cold water, could I turn it into a more effecient water source heat pump.
to clarify:
I am using the AC as an regular AC to cool a room. I am not going to use the warmed water for anything(for now) other than water the lawn. I do not care what temp it is. the water is acting as a heat sink(to absorb heat from the room) tap water is 65-70f year round and outside air temp can be over 100 and not humid.
The water would be a better heat transfer medium than air and if the water is flowing sufficiently and relativly cool, it will cool the outside coil more efficiently. This would result in better condensation of the refrigerant vapour, leading in turn to a lower pressure in the external coil. The lower pressure will mean that the compressor will, for the same energy load be able to compress more refrigerant, and this in turn should allow the airconditioner to remove more heat from the room.

Good price for a used air conditioner?
We have a window unit at work. It is a Carrier. It is in good condition. It is a year old. The building I wiork in is redoing the air condition and we no longer need the unit. It originally cost the company $650 a year ago. I want to purchase it from teh company but do not have $650. It has depreciated in value over the year I am sure. What is a fair price to pay for a 1year old air conditioner as stated above?
Realistically these will last 15 years. This said, the value of the unit dropped at least 25% when it went out the door, bringing the top price you want to pay for it @ $485. Lowball them, knowing that you have some wiggle room to go up if so desired. Go luck and happy haggling.

How do you dertermine the best central air conditioner for my house?
There are so many businesses that install air conditioning, they all want to come to my house to determine the price range. Is there any way to narrow down my selections?
It is true they do need to come to your house to determine what type and size of unit you will need. They will measure the rooms, look at your window size, check your insulation, look at your crawlspace or attic, look at your electrical box, etc. A proper company will do what is called a Manual J calculation. This will determine the tonnage of unit needed to heat and cool your home. Don't go with a company who doesn't do this! Get everything in writing.
Check with the local BBB to see if there are any complaints on any of the companies. The problem with HVAC companies is many pop up during the summer time and are gone by the next year. So make sure you get a company who has been in business for a period of time. They are least likely to "leave you hanging" in case of any problems.
If your city requires one, make sure to get a city inspection. Some companies don't relay this to the homeowner to save them time/money on inspection fees.
Another good idea is to find a company with a maintenance program. This will allow them to come clean the unit either once or twice a year. One with 24 hour service is also a plus.
Do research on central units to see what brands are best. Trane/American Standard are the same unit, as well as Bryant/Carrier. There are possibly 4-5 actual manufactureres out there so be careful of brands. Personally I have seen the most problems with low-end "builder" type units such as Rheem and Rudd.

If you intend to buy a portable air conditioner, there are some things to consider first. You do have to remember that although there are several machines with the same brands, specifications and even price tag, there are still differences (both subtle and major) between all of them. Perhaps one of the first things you should decide on first is whether or not you do need (want) a portable air conditioner. If you have an HVAC installed, such a machine can only add to your expenses considerably. It would be best to make minor room improvements if one part of your house does not seem to be getting enough cooling.
Also, if you have a very limited area, cramped to the gills with stuff, a portable air conditioner may not work well at all. Yes, these smaller machines are ideal for small spaces. If you space is too cramped and air does not flow as freely, you need to at least remove some stuff in order to (quite literally) let the room breathe.

Budget? ah, it?s the age old concern. Of course, this is a primary consideration for many of us because some units can reach easily into the thousand dollar range. Even the less expensive models can be more than a hundred dollars at the very least. If you have rather deep pockets, you can choose whatever brand or specifications you like. An energy saving unit can be a worthwhile investment, and may afford you a bit of savings on your utility bills in the long run. However, if you have limited options, units costing between $100 and $200 may serve you well too. The key is to look at specifications, and see what can be of greatest service to you.
If you have a very, very small space, a unit with a cooling capacity of 2.64 kW should be more than enough. At maximum power, this is enough to cool your tootsies to a numbing level. One concern for small spaces is the noise level of the machine. Anything louder than 60 dBA is definitely not good.
If you are in no particular hurry to get your own portable air conditioner, you could wait for sales: blow-out sales, closing sales, warehouse sales ? anything. You can get the best deals here yet. Check online stores for promotional deals as well. And before you take home a unit, make sure that you get all the privileges possible like: guarantees, warranties, and the lot. Not because you got it on sale, means the seller can skimp on the required services add-ons.
A hint of advice for those on really tight budgets: we do not recommend buying second hand units. Some of these may have defects or damages already that may give you more problems in the future than its actual worth in cash.
