As most computers are designed to work in offices and homes, conditions in other environments, such as industry or manufacturing, can shorten a PCs life drastically.

One of the most common causes for PC malfunction is dust which can block filters causing a processor to overheat and it can also clog up moving parts such as the hard drive and even cause a short circuit.

Water and computers obviously don’t mix well either. Even slight spray or splashing can cause terminal problems with a computer, especially if fluid finds its way into the electronics.

Excessive temperatures are also a problem for computers. Computer processors are usually cooled by internal fans, if they get too hot they can burn out as can most of the electronics inside a PC. However, excessive dust, dirt or grime can also cause an overheat, as will computers kept near a heat source such as a radiator or oven. Excessive cold can effect a computers operation also, if any condensation inside a computer freezes, it will expand, potentially damaging the components.

Shocks, vibrations, knocks and bangs can also finish off a computer for good. Even just moving a PC from one location to another can play havoc, dislodging PCI cards or unsettling wiring. A large enough of a jolt and it can cause irreparable damage. Computers have protective enclosures of course but these are only made from thin sheets of metal (normally aluminium) and offer little protection.

For computers having to operate in hostile conditions such as dusty warehouse or production line then the best protection comes in the shape of an industrial PC enclosure.

These computer enclosures allow a standard PC all the protection of the most expensive and rugged industrial machine, shielding the sensitive components from dust, water, dirt, vibration, banging, knocks, heat and cold.

By protecting a PC from these types of hostilities a PC’s life span can be dramatically lengthened.

Originally, furnace filters were designed to protect the furnace and fans. But now with the importance of air quality, it's being used with other equipments. Today it is being used in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) industry. Here are some of the other types of furnace filters.

Clean air is what all people want inside their homes. According to U.S. EPA indoor air is 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. The average person inhales about 18,185 liters of air each day. With this, the person breathes 1,120,000,000 particles of dust or microns.

• Disposable fiberglass filters

These filters are the least effective and cheapest units. They are designed to block large dust and particles only. This means smaller particles are not filtered. They are used to protect the furnace and placed in a cardboard frame.

They can filter about 2% of sub micron particles. They are typically installed in the ductwork of the home system.

• Pleated "allergy" filters

They are 35 to 50% efficient when it comes to filtering large allergens like pollen or dust. They are made of denser mesh material. They are better than flat filters. Most are made of electrostatically charged fibers that attract small particles. They cost around $5-$15 each and last for 3 months.

On the other hand, high standard units cost around $250 to $450. The pleats give the furnace filters more media, or surface area, where particles can be captured. Thin pleated filters can filter about 11% of sub micron particles and 25% in deep pleated. Some filters are sold pleated and electrostatic at the same time.

These filters produce 1 inch, 2 inch, and 4-6 inches deep materials. But air conditioners and heaters are 1-2 inches mostly. They usually have a MERV 5 rating.

• HEPA filters

High Efficiency Particulate Air filters are high standard units. They are used in hospitals, research facilities, and electronic laboratories. These places specifically require cleaner air. They block air particles but also blocks air flow.

They can filter about 2% of sub micron particles. They are also used in HEPA vacuum cleaners and HEPA air cleaners. They are advisable to be used by asthma sufferers.

They are similar in design to standard pleated air filters. But they have more pleats per inch to trap the smallest particles. They were developed by the Atomic Energy Commission during World War II. They were created to remove and capture radioactive dust particles from the air. They were designed to protect the human respiratory system.

They consist of a core filter that is folded over corrugated separators to strengthen core. They form the air passages between the pleats.

• Activated Carbon Air Filter

They are known as charcoal filters and are an alternative to media air filters. They are installed together with the regular filter pads. They are used for removing cigarette smokes, chemical and other odors. It removes the undesirable smells in the house. They are also available in panel filters but not as effective as the others.

Does anyone make air filters for COmputers?

My Medion Desktop gets EXTREAMLY DUSTY on the inside. I have to blow it out at least every two weeks. I have gotten to the point of only turning on the computer when I need it (we have a laptop hooked to a wireless network). The fans go crazy because of all the dust. Its a pain to clean it every couple of weeks. If no one makes filters, could I make one out of a cut up furnace filter? It wont restrict the air flow too much will it?

HI been a compulsive Modder/Performance Freak me and two Friends was sat talking (Computers of course) and we came up with an solution to fan filters a box (internal) fro a 80mm fan think of a rubber pipe collar round or a square box section that will fit over the fan, then you need (don't laugh) woman's tights cut a round or square peace out to fit over the walls of the tube/box and secure with wire, this works my mate has this now on his input fans, no restriction of air flow and a very clean case, SO some thing 20mm deep with no ends that will span the fan and a section of Lady's tights stretched over the end furthest from the fan. We're now entering the hottest part of the summer here in the United States and many of us are faced with a difficult decision. We can stay cool and dry in our homes but end up paying for high electric bills due to the cost of running our air conditioners all the time. Or we can skip the AC and live in hot and humid discomfort for a couple months out of the year while we hope for cooler weather.

If you're struggling with paying your electric bill to keep the air conditioner on this summer than take heart, here are a few simple and inexpensive ways you can help your air conditioner work less and keep your home cooler:

Use shades on windows and doors: Sunlight pouring in through your windows can warm your home like an oven, especially in the long sunny days of summer. You'll be amazed at how much cooler your home can be with the strategic placement of a few light-blocking shades over your sunniest windows. Regular shades or curtains aren't going to cut it. If you can hold your window covering up to the sunny sky and see ANY light coming through, then it isn't a true light-blocking covering. Most light-blocking curtains actually have a thick liner, sometimes plastic and sometimes made out of cloth. You can keep your regular decorative curtains in place, just be sure to also use light blocking curtains between your decorative curtains and the window. Close them during the sunniest part of the day and your home will stay much cooler.

Clean your air filters: Whether you have a central air conditioner or window AC units, you have to clean or even replace your air filters every so often to make sure you have a consistent flow of cool air. A dirty air filter can block air from being blown by your air conditioner. If your air filter is really dirty it could actually cause your AC blower to overheat or cause your air conditioner evaporator coils to freeze over. Both problems can damage an air conditioner and be costly to fix. You'll want to check your air filter once and month and follow the manufacturer's instructions for ways of cleaning or replacing the filter on a regular schedule.

Seal and insulate: One way to keep your home cool is to make sure you're not losing any cool air from your air conditioner where you shouldn't be. No matter what kind of air conditioner you have you can inspect all your windows and doors and make sure you don't have any drafts or gaps where cool air is seeping out. If you have window units you may want to make sure they are held tightly and have no gap around their mounting hardware. If you have a central AC unit then you'll want to inspect as much of the metal ductwork as you can, using foil tape to seal up any pin holes or gap that may have formed over time that let out precious cool air. You may also want to close the air duct registers and doors in rooms you don't use so that your air conditioner doesn't have to try to cool those rooms too.

Any single one of these methods will help keep your home interior cool and help your air conditioner keep up this summer. When combined using these cooling tips can really help you save money on your electric bill this summer!
